Modems : Protocols

One modem must be able to transmit and receive data to and from modems of different makes in possibly different countries using different telephone systems. Therefore a variety of standards specifying transmission speeds, compression and error correction and detection methods have been established.

Such standards which describe how information is communicated are known as protocols. The most common protocol for new modems is known as V.90.
