The GCSE ICT Companion 04 is supplied as a web site on CD. You do not need a web server or access to the Internet to use the ICT Companion. It can be used in six different ways :
General Requirements
To use the GCSE ICT Companion 04 you need :
We recommend a display resolution of at least 800*600 with at least 16,000 colours. The ICT Companion will work at lower resolutions but the reduced screen space makes it harder to carry out certain tasks. Any computer that the ICT Companion is installed on will need about 20Mb of free disk space. Note that if you are using the ICT Companion on a network or Intranet this space is only required on the server, not on each workstation.
Almost all computers made in the last five years would satisfy the above requirements.
Using Online Submission of Worksheets and Marking
If you wish to use these features :
Then you need to make the ICT Companion available through an ASP web server. A suitable web server is Internet Information Service (IIS), which is supplied as part of Microsoft Server operating systems (e.g. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server). The ICT Companion has been tested with versions 4, 5 and 6 of IIS.
If you do not have or choose not to use an ASP web server students can still complete worksheets online and store worksheet answers and quiz results online. It is only the online monitioring and marking of worksheets that requires an ASP web server.
Limitations in Netscape Navigator
The following small number of limitations have been identified if you use the ICT Companion in Netscape Navigator instead of Internet Explorer :
The GSCE ICT Companion 04 is supplied on a CD-R. The ICT Companion
can be used straight from CD on a standalone computer, be installed on a hard disk on a standalone computer or be used over a network.
Where possible we recommend that you install the package onto a web server (the bottom option). To see exactly which features are
available under different installation options please read section 13. Please select your preferred usage option from this table and then turn to the appropriate section : These instructions explain how to use the GCSE ICT Companion 04 directly from the CD. This is the simplest way to access the package on a standalone computer. Go to the Start Menu and choose
Programs then select the
Windows Explorer icon. Scroll down the list
in the left hand window until you find your CD drive and then click on the icon for
the CD drive. It should look similar to this, but the drive letter (e.g. E:) may be different : These instructions explain how to install the GCSE ICT Companion 04 onto the hard disc drive of
a standalone computer so that the package can be used without the CD in the drive. To install the ICT Companion onto a hard disk drive you need to copy the folder

folder to select it. Do not click twice to open it.
| 4.  | Go to the Edit menu and choose the Copy option. 5.  | Now you need to select where on your hard disk you want to put the ICT Companion. Most people choose to put it in the root folder of the C Drive but you can put it anywhere you want to. If you choose to put the ICT Companion in the root folder of the C Drive then follow these steps :
If you wish to install the ICT Companion to a different place then simply select that folder instead. 6.  | Go to the Edit menu and choose the Paste option. The ICT Companion will now be copied from the CD onto your hard drive. 7.  | If you do not want the answers to the worksheets to be available
in the installation then delete the directories store and aspdb from within the ict4 folder after the files have copied.
| |
You can now use the ICT Companion without the CD. To access the ICT Companion you need to load your web browser. To use the ICT Companion without answers open the file index.htm in the ict4 folder. To use the ICT Companion with answers open the file aindex.htm in the ict4 folder instead (note this will not work if the store directory has been deleted).
Now go to section 11 to find out how to load the ICT Companion.
The GCSE ICT Companion 04 can be used on a network from a file server or a web server. This will avoid the need to install the package onto each workstation. The preferred method of usage will depend upon your current network setup. We recommend the first option (ASP Web Server) as this provides the fullest access to all of the ICT Companion 04's features. If your file server runs Windows 2000 or later you will have Internet Information Services (IIS) which is an ASP web server. This table summarises the possibilities. To see exactly which features are available under different installation options please consult section 13. After considering the options, turn to the appropriate section indicated in the table below.

You should now check that the ICT Companion IV had been setup correctly. To do this :
The web page will report any problems with the installation, and advise you on how to correct them.
Section 8.VIII : Troubleshooting
If you encounter any problems then please vist out support website at www.cedar.u-net.com/support.htm.
Now go to section 11 to find out how to load the ICT Companion.
Section 9.I : Introduction
These instructions explain how to setup the GCSE ICT Companion 04 for use from a non-ASP web server.
To use the ICT Companion from a web server you must first setup a web server package on a computer. You must also be using the TCP/IP protocol on your network. Most new network operating systems are supplied with both of these features. For example Microsoft Windows 2000 Server is supplied with these components, but they may need to be configured.
If you are using a web server such as Internet Information Services (IIS) that supports ASP we recommend that you follow the alternative instructions in section 8 above so that you can access all of the features of the package.
Section 9.II : Copying To Web Server Hard Disk
It is possible to either use the ICT Companion directly from the CD on the web server or to install it onto the hard disk of the web server. If you wish to install the package onto the hard disk then please follow these instructions, otherwise move on to section 9.III.
1.
Go to the Start Menu and choose Programs then select the Windows Explorer icon. 2.  | Scroll down the list in the left hand window until you find your CD drive and then click on the icon for the CD drive. It should look similar to this, but the drive letter (e.g. E:) may be different : 3.  | The right hand window will
now display the files and folders that are stored on the CD. Click once on the ict4
folder to select it. Do not click twice to open it.
| 4.  | Go to the Edit menu and choose the Copy option. 5.  | Now you need to select where on your hard disk you want to put the ICT Companion. Use Windows Explorer to select the folder that you want to install to. Your web server software may require that the ICT Companion is placed in a particular location. 6.  | Go to the Edit menu and choose the Paste option. The ICT Companion will now be copied from the CD onto the hard drive of your web server. |
Section 9.III : Making the ICT Companion Available To Other Computers
You now need to make the ICT Companion available to the other computers on your network. This can be achieved by :
Section 9.IV : Restricting Access To Answers
You will probably want to restrict access to the answers to the worksheets so that only teachers can view them. To achieve this :
Students should load the ICT Companion by opening the index.htm file and teachers should load the ICT Companion by opening the aindex.htm file.
An alternative method to restrict access to the answers is to simply delete the store and aspdb directories on the copy of the ICT Companion that is on the web server. You can then access the answers directly from the CD or from a separate second installation of the ICT Companion by opening the aindex.htm file.
Section 9.V : Browser Configuration
You should now check that the ICT Companion can be successfully accesssed from the web server at a workstation by attempting to load it in a web browser.
If the package will not load successfully then it may be that the web browser on the workstation needs to be reconfigured to use Java and Javascript. You can test the configuration of the browser by opening the file tester.htm on the workstation. This file can be found in the ict4 folder on the web server.
Section 9.VI : Troubleshooting
If you encounter any problems then please vist out support website at www.cedar.u-net.com/support.htm.
Now go to section 11 to find out how to load the ICT Companion.
Section 10.I : Introduction
These instructions explain how to setup the GCSE ICT Companion 04 for use from a file server.
This method should be used if you want to use the ICT Companion on a network of computers that does not have a web server. The package will be accessed on the workstations from the file server using file sharing. If you have a web server setup then we recommend that you share the package using the web server instead. See section 7 above.
Section 10.II : Copying To File Server Hard Disk
It is possible to either use the ICT Companion directly from the CD on the file server or to install it onto the hard disk of the file server. If you wish to install the package onto the hard disk then please follow these instructions, otherwise move on to section 10.III.
We recommend that you install the ICT Companion to a folder that is already shared on your network and, preferably, is mapped as a local drive (e.g. H:) on your workstations. This will reduce the amount of work you have to do later. 6.  | Go to the Edit menu and choose the Paste option. The ICT Companion will now be copied from the CD onto the hard drive of your file server. |
Section 10.III : Making the ICT Companion Available To Other Computers
You now need to make the ICT Companion available to the other computers on your network. To do this you need to :
Students should load the ICT Companion by opening the index.htm file and teachers should load the ICT Companion by opening the aindex.htm file.
Section 10.IV : Accessing the ICT Companion From Workstations
The GCSE ICT Companion 04 should now be accessible on workstations. From a workstation you simply need to load the index.htm file in the ict4 folder on the file server into a compatible web browser.
Note For Netscape Navigator Users
If you are using Netscape Navigator as your web browser then you can not access the ICT Companion from a file server by typing in a windows network name such as \\server\ict4\index.htm. Instead you must map a local drive letter on the workstation to the share on the file server that contains the ICT Companion.
You can map a local drive letter to a share on the file server in a Windows Operating System by right-clicking on the share name in Windows Explorer and choosing Map Network Drive.
After the mapping has taken place, you should be able to access the ICT Companion on a workstation by typing a pathname such as "H:\ict4\index.htm" instead of "\\server\ict4\index.htm".
Section 10.V : Browser Configuration
You should now check that the ICT Companion can be successfully accesssed from the file server at a workstation by attempting to load it in a web browser. to do this :
If the package will not load successfully then it may be that the web browser on the workstation needs to be reconfigured to use Java and Javascript. You can test the configuration of the browser by opening the file tester.htm on the workstation. This file can be found in the ict4 folder on the file server.
Section 10.VI : Troubleshooting
If you encounter any problems then please vist out support website at www.cedar.u-net.com/support.htm.
To load the GCSE ICT Companion 04 you must open the appropriate file in the ict4 directory. The name of this file depends upon where you are loading the ICT Companion from :
The simplest way to load the package is to just double-click on the appropriate file. Your web browser will load automatically with ther ICT Companion in it.
When the GCSE ICT Companion 04 has loaded you will be presented with a title screen. Most of the available options are self-explanatory and are selected from the navigation panel on the left of the screen.
If you want to find out more about using a particular option then select the
option on the navigation panel. This will display the help menu. A
user guide can be printed by choosing the
option and then selecting
the Booklet Printing Menu.
To access all of the features of the GCSE ICT Companion 04 you must use a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later or Netscape Navigator 7.0 or or later with a Java Virtual Machine. To test if your browser is properly configured open the file tester.htm on the CD.
Some of the facilities of the ICT Companion are only available if you access the ICT Companion through an ASP web server. This table indicates which features are available depending on whether you use an ASP web server or not :
