GCSE ICT Companion 04 Non-ASP Web Server Installation

Section I : Introduction

These instructions explain how to setup the GCSE ICT Companion 04 for use from a non-ASP web server.

To use the ICT Companion from a web server you must first setup a web server package on a computer. You must also be using the TCP/IP protocol on your network. Most new network operating systems are supplied with both of these features. For example Microsoft Windows 2000 Server is supplied with these components, but they may need to be configured.

If you are using a web server such as Internet Information Services (IIS) that supports ASP we recommend that you follow these alternative instructions so that you can access all of the features of the package.

Section II : Copying To Web Server Hard Disk

It is possible to either use the ICT Companion directly from the CD on the web server or to install it onto the hard disk of the web server. If you wish to install the package onto the hard disk then please follow these instructions, otherwise move on to section III.

1.

Go to the Start Menu and choose Programs then select the Windows Explorer icon.

2.

Scroll down the list in the left hand window until you find your CD drive and then click on the icon for the CD drive. It should look similar to this, but the drive letter (e.g. E:) may be different :

3. The right hand window will now display the files and folders that are stored on the CD. Click once on the ict4 folder to select it. Do not click twice to open it.

4.

Go to the Edit menu and choose the Copy option.

5.

Now you need to select where on your hard disk you want to put the ICT Companion. Use Windows Explorer to select the folder that you want to install to. Your web server software may require that the ICT Companion is placed in a particular location.

6.

Go to the Edit menu and choose the Paste option. The ICT Companion will now be copied from the CD onto the hard drive of your web server.

Section III : Making the ICT Companion Available To Other Computers

You now need to make the ICT Companion available to the other computers on your network. This can be achieved by :

Section IV : Restricting Access To Answers

You will probably want to restrict access to the answers to the worksheets so that only teachers can view them. To achieve this :

Students should load the ICT Companion by opening the index.htm file and teachers should load the ICT Companion by opening the aindex.htm file.

An alternative method to restrict access to the answers is to simply delete the store and aspdb directories on the copy of the ICT Companion that is on the web server. You can then access the answers directly from the CD or from a separate second installation of the ICT Companion by opening the aindex.htm file.

Section V : Browser Configuration

You should now check that the ICT Companion can be successfully accesssed from the web server at a workstation by attempting to load it in a web browser.

If the package will not load successfully then it may be that the web browser on the workstation needs to be reconfigured to use Java and Javascript. You can test the configuration of the browser by opening the file tester.htm on the workstation. This file can be found in the ict4 folder on the web server.
