(6)    Write true or false by each of these statements about coding data.    [5]

StatementTrue / False
Coding data makes it easier to validate (check) it.
Coding data can speed up typing it in.
All codes use the numbers 0 and 1.
Coding data can reduce how much space it takes up.
All users must know the codes that a system uses.

(7)    George is designing a simple computer. He wants to be able to store the letters A to H in its memory. George knows that the computer will only really be able to store the numbers 0 and 1 and so he must invent a code to let the computer store the letters. His code starts like this :    [6]

Letter  Computer Code  Letter  Computer Code
A000E
B001F
C  G
D  H

Each of the codes will be made up of three digits. Complete the code.

(8)    Fill in the blanks in the following paragraph using the words below.    [7]

graph who purpose output device

Information can be presented in many different ways. The best way to present a piece of information will depend upon the ________________ the information is being used for, ________________ the information is being presented to and what ________________ you have available. For example statistical information could be presented as a table, a ________________ or writing. Computer ________________ can be used to present information. Information presented on paper is known as ________________ . Computers output information on an ________________ .

(9)    Draw lines to link the words on the right hand side of the page with the correct definitions on the left hand side.    [6]

(6)    A computerised information system is used to produce the top 40 singles chart every week. At the start of the week a list of all of the singles that are for sale is entered into the system. Then, whenever a single is sold, the unique code identifying the single is entered and stored. At the end of the week the computer counts the total number of each single that has been sold and prints out the top 40.

List the inputs and outputs of the system, explaining what processing will have to be carried out and suggesting what data the system may store permanently.

A computerised information system is used to register pupils at a school. The system stores information in two files. The students file stores the names of all of the students and the attendances file stores information about their attendance at school. To take the register the teacher enters the name of the form to be registered into the system. The system looks up the the names of all of the students in the form in the students file and displays them on a monitor. The teacher then enters whether each of the students is present or or not. This information is stored in the attendances file. At the end of each week the system can calculate statistics about each student's attendance and produce a printed report.

   [6]

This system flowchart shows how the system operates. Some of the labels on the flowchart are missing.

The six labels written below belong on the diagram. Letters have been written on the diagram instead of them. By each label write the letter that is in the label's place on the diagram.

This comes in two types, RAM ( ________________ ) which can be read from and written to but which loses its contents when the computer is turned off and ROM ( ________________ ) which can not be written to but which keeps its contents when the computer is turned off. Programs and data that are not currently being used are kept in ________________ . This is also known as secondary store. The three main media used for this type of storage are magnetic disks, magnetic tapes and ________________ .

field count hash totals manually
batches typing in entered twice automatically
out

When data is input in ________________ , batch totals and ________________ can be used for validation. A batch total is a ________________ of the number of documents that data will be entered from. It is calculated ________________ by the user before input takes place. After the data has been input the system ________________ counts the number of items entered. If the manual and automatic totals do not match then a document has been ________________ or missed ________________ so the input data must be checked and changed. A hash total is more sophisticated. It is worked out by adding up all of the values in a particular ________________ on each input document. This is done by the user and by the system. If the two totals do not match then either the number of documents entered is incorrect or a mistake was made ________________ one of the values.

Verification checks ensure that entered data is correct.
A range check tests that entered data is no longer than a specified number of characters.
A limit check has only one boundary.
The dual input method is a validation check.
Parity checks are used to test data entered from a bar code.
Validation and verification checks can only be performed by a database package.
Validation checks are performed automatically by a computer.

(7)    Periodically a supermarket will carry out a stock check to ensure that the stock level field in the products file correctly stores the number of items of each product that are in stock. The flowchart below shows the steps involved in a stock check. The statements that belong on the symbols are listed to the right of the chart.

By each statement write the letter that is in the statement's place on the diagram.

Display name of product and expected number in stock.__
Stop.__
Scan barcode of a product to check.__
Change stored stock level to actual stock level if required.__
Start.__
Any products left to check?__
Count and enter actual number in stock.__

You can pay for purchases using a loyalty card.
You can earn a discount if you use a loyalty card when you shop.
Information is stored on a loyalty card as a barcode.

This worksheet covers the "systems lifecycle", "analysis", "design", "implementation", "testing""evaluation" and "user guide" topics.

(1)    This diagram illustrates the five stages of the systems lifecycle. The labels that should appear in the boxes have been replaced by letters. Write the letter that matches each label by the list of labels that appears on the right hand side of the diagram.    [5]

(2)

A feasibility study is carried out as part of the analysis stage of the systems lifecycle. During this study information is collected about an existing information system if there is one. This can be done using questionnaires, interviews and observation. State one advantage and one disadvantage of each method of collecting information.

The old and new systems are used together until users and confident that the new system works. During the changeover all data is entered into both systems. * Parallel
The new system replaces the old one in parts, e.g at one branch of a store at a time. * Pilot
At a particular time the old system is scrapped and completely replaced by the new system. * Direct
