GCSE ICT Companion 04 Network Installation

The GCSE ICT Companion 04 can be used on a network from a file server or a web server. This will avoid the need to install the package onto each workstation. The preferred method of usage will depend upon your current network setup. We recommend the first option (ASP Web Server) as this provides the fullest access to all of the ICT Companion 04's features. If your file server runs Windows 2000 or later you will have Internet Information Services (IIS) which is an ASP web server. This table summarises the possibilities. To see exactly which features are available under different installation options please click here. Press on a Go button for instructions about how to use a particular method.

Method Description Advantage Disdvantage
ASP Web Server The ICT Companion is installed on an ASP web server such as Internet Information Service (supplied with Windows 2000 Server) and other computers access it from the web server. The ICT Companion package is only installed on the web server. You can link it to an existing web site. e.g. you could create a link to it from your intranet home page. Students can complete worksheets online, with their work being stored in an Access database. Teachers can mark and monitor work online. If you do not have a web server then you need to obtain one and install it first, although most file servers are now supplied with web server software as part of the operating system.
Non-ASP Web Server The ICT Companion is installed on a non-ASP web server and other computers access it from the web server. The ICT Companion package is only installed on the web server. You can link it to an existing web site. e.g. you could create a link to it from your intranet home page. Students can complete worksheets online, with their work being stored in cookies. If you do not have a web server then you need to obtain one and install it first, although most file servers are now supplied with web server software as part of the operating system. Teachers can not mark or monitor students online.
File Server The ICT Companion is installed on a file server and other computers access it from the file server's hard disk or CD as if the drive was a local one. The ICT Companion package is only installed on the file server. A web server is not needed. Worksheets can be completed online. You may have to map local drive names to the file server on some network operating systems. Teachers can not mark or monitor students online.

Alternatively you can install the package locally on each workstation. Information from the ICT Companion can also be printed and photocopied for use, subject to the licence agreement.
